I’ve had a problem with beer ads for a long time.
This really isn't surprising as the recurring narrative in these ads is too often one that uses women as sexual objects to sell a product or as accessories to increase the "macho-ness" of a man. Taglines like "stag, a man's beer" all contribute to this sexist trend.
At this point I'm so used to rolling my eyes at these and writing them off as lazy marketing. After all it's a lot easier to use a pretty girl to sell beer than it is to come up with an innovative ad campaign.
Why the sudden interest in beer ads, you might ask?
This ad basically condones domestic violence, in an attempt to make a joke about your girlfriend's reaction to you watching cricket. I don't understand how this was seen as the best option and furthermore, how it was approved to send out.
Did no one stop for a moment and realize, oh wait this is pretty bad, maybe we should revise this before sending it out on to the internet?
Nevertheless, It went live on their Instagram and viewers were obviously upset at this ad condoning domestic violence, especially coming from a well recognized brand like Carib.
Since then Carib has taken down the ad and issued an official apology, but people are still understandably upset and confused as to how and why this was allowed to happen in the first place.
To me, @officiallifeinleggings expressed it best in a post on their Instagram.
What are your thoughts on this Carib Controversy?
